در جلسه ی سیزدهم، تحلیل متن "فونداسیون" را به اتمام رساندیم و تحلیل متن "دیوارها و منافذ" را آغاز کردیم.

Energy and Architecture

Energy has become a critical factor in national and global economic development, giving rise to many debate among experts. Whether or not there is a true energy crisis at this time may be debated, but it is certain that the era of plentiful and cheap fossil fuels is ending, with other valuable sources also reaching an end. Also ending with it will be the extravagant use of energy to create interior comfort conditions and lighting within buildings that largely ignore the natural environment. We are now begiing to develop an architecture that is more responsive to environmental factors and is much less dependent on the more valuable fossil fuels. Some call this "energy-conserving" design, but a better term may be "energy-conscious" design, since we will still be constructing energy-consuming buildings- only at a much lower level of consumption per unit area.

انرژی به یک عامل بسیار مهم در توسعه ی اقتصادی ملی و جهانی تبدیل و منجر به بحث های زیادی میان کارشناسان شده است. اینکه آیا یک بحران واقعی انرژی در این زمان وجود دارد هنوز مورد بحث است، اما آشکار است که دوره ی سوخت های فسیلی ارزان و فراوان در حال به اتمام رسیدن است، در حالی که دیگر منابع ارزشمند نیز به انتهای خود نزدیک می شوند. آنچه علاوه بر این منابع به اتمام می رسد استفاده ی افراطی از انرژی برای خلق شرایط آسایش داخلی و نورپردازی داخل ساختمانهاست که تا حد زیادی محیط طبیعی اطراف را نادیده می گیرند. در زمان حاضره ما در ابتدای راه توسعه ی یک نوع معماری هستیم که در قبال عوامل زیست محیطی پاسخگوتر می باشد و وابستگی کمتری به منابع ارزشمند فسیلی دارد. برخی نام این رویکرد را طراحی "محافظت از انرژی" می نامند، اما شاید یک واژه ی بهتر، طراحی "آگاه از انرژی" باشد، زیرا ما همچنان ساختمان هایی خواهیم ساخت که از انرژی استفاده می کنند، اما این ساخت و ساز با سطح بسیارکمتری از مصرف انرژی در واحد مساحت محقق خواهد شد.
